💻 Computer Basics with AnimalOS

AnimalOS is a pretend computer inside TypZoo — a friendly desktop where kids practice real computer skills with zero risk. Nothing they click can break anything, cost anything, or talk to the real internet.

What kids practice

The guided lessons

Each lesson is a step-by-step guide card on top of the live desktop — kids perform the real action (right-click the file, drag it to Downloads) rather than watching a video about it.

Why these skills matter for school

"Computer literacy" used to mean knowing your way around a desktop. Today it's woven through everyday schoolwork: logging in to a learning platform, saving and finding a document, attaching a file, telling a useful search result from a misleading one. Children who are comfortable with these basics spend their attention on the assignment rather than on fighting the machine — the same way fluent typing frees attention for the writing itself.

And the confidence compounds. A child who knows that Ctrl + Z undoes mistakes will explore and try things, because nothing feels fragile or final.

Digital literacy, roughly by age

AgeReasonable goals
5–7Turn a device on/off, log in, open and close programs, use a mouse and keyboard, understand "ask a grown-up before clicking."
8–10Save and find files, use folders, search and skim-read results, basic email, understand passwords are private.
11+Organise files sensibly, judge whether a source is trustworthy, use shortcuts, understand a digital footprint and online kindness.

AnimalOS covers the first two bands directly; the third is where these habits carry into real schoolwork.

Why a pretend computer?

The first time a child meets logins, file dialogs, or an inbox shouldn't be on a real machine where mistakes have consequences. A sandbox builds the same mental models — "files live in folders", "deleted isn't gone yet", "passwords are secrets" — with all of the learning and none of the stakes. Because nothing connects to the real internet, there's also nothing to stumble into: it's a place to practise being online before being online.
